Urine for Cytology or Chemistry Tests

The following instructions are for patients attending a Urine for Cytology or Chemistry Test.  There are various tests available.  Please follow the instructions for the test type recommended for you by your clinician.
 

24 Hour

Collect into 4L bottle provided.  Take extreme caution if bottle contains acid. Store out of reach of children.

  • Empty bladder completely into the toilet and note the time on the label of the container provided as the starting time for the test.
  • Collect and pour all urine passed for the next 24 hours into the container provided.
  • Make final collection EXACTLY 24 hours after the starting time you have noted on the container label, try to empty bladder at this time.
  • Write time of final collection on container label as well as your name and date of birth.
  • Deliver to the Collection Centre on day of completion.

Creatinine Clearance

Collect as above and observe the following:

  • Drink 600ml (3 average glasses) of fluid 10-15 minutes prior to the test.
  • Avoid vigorous exercise during the test period (24 hours).
  • Avoid taking Cortisol, Thyroxine and/or ACTH on day of test (inform GP).
  • Deliver container and form to the Collection Centre at 9:00am and a blood test will be taken.

Cytology Urine

Three specimens are collected on different days and each specimen must be delivered daily to the Collection Centre on the day of collection.

  • Drink as much fluid as possible and collect specimen mid-morning (the first urine in the morning should not be used).  A minimum of 50ml urine is required in the container provided.
  • Ensure name and date of birth are clearly written on the jar and either Specimen 1, 2 or 3.
  • Ensure date and time of collection are written on the form.
  • Take each specimen (and form) into the Collection Centre each day, as soon after collection as possible.  Refrigerate if delay anticipated.
